Country-specific import compliance
Have the destination importer or licensed broker confirm HS classification, permits, conformity checks and labelling before paying a deposit. A certificate accepted in one country may not satisfy another country's requirements. Medical, electrical and regulated goods need particular care.
Port-to-site delivery
Compare the complete route, not just ocean freight: destination handling, clearance, storage, insurance and inland transport. For landlocked destinations, confirm transit arrangements and border responsibilities with the forwarder before selecting a port.
Local operating conditions
Specify voltage, frequency, plug type, heat, dust, humidity and fuel availability. Choose equipment whose consumables, replacement parts and repair skills are accessible locally. Ask for manuals and training requirements before committing.
Regional trade and origin
Do not assume goods bought from China become eligible for AfCFTA preferences after arriving in an African country. Preferential treatment depends on the applicable rules of origin and proof, as well as the participating countries' implementation. Ask customs to confirm eligibility before using a preferential rate in your costing.
